Perhaps, and I suspect Jess is subtweeting a specific things, but...in the case of an OSS project with no governance or business entity defined, the assets of that project are generally owned & controlled by a single or few individual(s), and that can be problematic.https://twitter.com/jessfraz/status/938491387959500803 …

While you can certainly over-engineer governance, I don't think it's ever too early to think about it, not as soon as you have more than one contributor.

And there are many ways to go about governance, and many kinds of business entities to choose from, depending on your goals and circumstances. One way is not inherently best.

And OSS project may not have reached the adoption threshold Jess is thinking about but it could still be meaningful to small communities. I'm thinking of Calagator here specifically.

When Igal died, we were lucky that we were able to retain access to Calagator assets and move them to a more appropriate long-term home.

I think the FOSS community as a whole would benefit from more project leads thinking about their projects as businesses. So, I'm going to encourage folks to think about governance and organizational structure earlier rather than later.

Most of the time when FOSS leads finally start thinking about scaling, it's much later than they ought to have.

That said, I am absolutely weary of things like the Linux Foundation's open source trade association factory business model.
