The college admissions cheating thing is another awesome chapter for my "nonprofits are not magic" book.

Every single one of these parents knew they were not making legit nonprofit donations and they did it anyway. The well off in the country absolutely know that nonprofits are a way for them get something they want in a socially acceptable way.

By and large, nonprofits in this country were created to allow rich people to avoid paying taxes. That hasn't changed.

I think there's a legit argument to exempting certain public benefit organizations from paying taxes. Where that line is, I'm not sure. Some hate that churches are tax-exempt. I don't, as a rule.

I do think we rely way too much on "charities" to provide public services that should be provided by our government, adequately funded THROUGH TAXES.

I absolutely think we should do away with tax-exempt business associations and private foundations.

Most rich folks who are noted for giving significantly to charity do so through their private family foundations.

While some family foundations live on quite long after original founding (Ford Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, etc.) For many this is just a way to get cookies for donating to charity while maintaining complete control over the money & who benefits from it.

I mean the Trump Foundation is one of the most egregious recent examples of this.

Linux Foundation is another tax-exempt business association that I absolutely do not think should be tax-exempt. They are on a lot of your minds b/c they just this week birthed YAOSF (yet another open source foundation).

(And shit on a bunch of existing community-focused sustainability efforts by launching their own sustainability platform, but I digress...)
