A bit more about this: in addition to more detailed breakdowns, these studies report outcomes for entire “consecutively referred” populations. This is interesting but only meaningful in light of how this group was being assembled, and they give basically no info!https://twitter.com/jessesingal/status/1378460391278264322 …

2/ This person doesn't really know about this issue. She doesn't know what "clinically referred" means. She implies Dutch people are bringing their kids into the Amsterdam clinic just sorta for the hell of it or outta transphobia/homophobia. But you can just *read the research* pic.twitter.com/2LKSBrDYay

Was outside professional judgment involved—for example, were referrals the result of outside psychologists administering screeners? Or was it just parent judgement—like GPs just writing referrals on request, or parents directly initiating contact w clinics?

There’s just a bunch of stuff that this is interesting for. For example the Zucker and Dutch clinics were diagnosing most of the “referred” kids with GID, which is interesting imo if there wasn’t prior clinical judgment involved in the referrals.

Jesse seems to have assumed I have an agenda here to reject desistance stats and I just don’t lol in the first instance I just think this is a point of real unclarity in the literature that I would like to understand

I think different clinics did not necessarily have especially similar populations I think it’s a mistake to treat them as just repetitions of the same result of high “desistance” rateshttps://twitter.com/christapeterso/status/1378033972177891328 …

its really not obvious that ex. parents bringing their kid to a gender clinic bc they pathologize their gender variance and parents bringing their kid to a clinic bc they think they might want to transition and want to support them would be the same population of kids

wrt kids transitioning what matters isn’t the population of kids that were diagnosed with GID and whether they desisted, it’s the population of kids that would want to actually socially transition and whether a significant number of them would be harmed by being supported in that

also important to keep in mind that these follow ups are happening in adolescence and early adulthoodhttps://twitter.com/AlexSharpe64/status/1378819916170727425 …

It’s also important to follow up ‘desisters’ to see how things pan out over the life course as there any many reasons why trans ppl might ‘desist’ in this society.

ok 1 last thing: if you do a bad job sorting out kids who are just gender nonconforming you will definitely get a high “desistance” rate! people are like “how could all these studies be wrong in the same way” and well.... any random group of kids will be almost all not trans

If the initial identifying criteria aren’t good it doesn’t mean anything that most of them grow up to not be trans! Literally nothing! seriously the studies with bad selection criteria are not evidence at all

The Dutch study has the most reasonable criteria but all these other studies are used to make their result seem replicated albeit in lower quality studies but seriously if the criteria aren’t good they can’t tell us anything

Many trans ppl, esp in earlier decades, didn’t transition till middle age. We all know why, hardly a secret. An irony may be, if ‘detransition’ has increased as phenomenon, may be linked to attempts by some to make life more unbearable to live. Of course, just a hypothesis.
