ADHD is probably the most common disability universities need to accommodate, & they mostly just don't. 1 student after another falls on the same problems, bc of the same core features of the disability, & as far as I can tell most universities' plan for them is failing them out.pic.twitter.com/0KMuIt7kvl

Lots of universities have policies where students that officially withdraw get a W and no GPA hit, but those that fall off the map but don't press the "withdraw" button effectively get an F, shuffling them below GPA reqs & out of the university.pic.twitter.com/i2wq7LjRc6

Students whose brains are working ok can realize that they're not finishing the course and take the basic steps to withdraw! Who gets this penalty other than students with uncontrolled ADHD or mental illness

It's normal for students with ADHD to struggle to complete papers on time, and also normal for them to not get *any accommodations for it,* because disability offices don't want to give them accommodations granting extensions bc work can pile up and never get done.

There are other accommodations they could get, if schools were like... trying. A basic one is help from instructors in breaking long assignments into parts, with different due dates for different parts. There are also things like reduced length, and just alternative assessments.

There's surely other stuff, idk I'm not the specialist! But I know that when students with ADHD are getting extended time for exams & literally nothing for papers, when so many students with ADHD struggle to complete them, that's... a problem?

ok here's something you can actually do: if you're a student with ADHD, and you think you'd benefit from help breaking a long assignment into concrete chunks, that is something it is completely appropriate to ask for help with during office hours

Another accommodation I've thought could work for some students is timed essay exams instead of normal essays.https://twitter.com/SkinbagI/status/1301992093317963782?s=20 …

I can take tests just fine -- the stress focuses my mind. No need to accommodate me for tests But little boring assignments that take 45 minutes? Papers and projects with vague instructions and distant due dates? You'd be amazed that I made it as far as I did https://twitter.com/christapeterso/status/1301990094757265409 …

this is the handout from a presentation I did for new TAs in my department about students with disabilities, it's a few years old and I wish it had more about accommodating issues with papers in advance but maybe useful to some peoplehttps://docdro.id/IsZ3z9H

one thing, though I get why it's complicated as an aftermarket accomodation: I need to be able to just fuck up, like, 2-3 times! I have done better in every class I've ever taken where the prof dropped the lowest quiz grade, or let you turn in 4/5 weekly papers, or whatever

I am focused on post-course design accommodations bc that’s the only thing I primarily control as a TA, but like Zara says, what’s ideal is building classes that are accessible from the starthttps://twitter.com/zaranosaur/status/1302258075441692674 …

this is basically sorta kinda the idea behind universal design for learning, or the view that teachers should just build classes & pedagogy, similar to events or conferences, with broad based access measures from the start, reducing need for “accommodations”

Most courses are designed *exclusively* with abled students in mind, tailored to the workload they can handle and how they best learn. Imagine taking a class designed specifically for people like us

People often act like the goal of post hoc accommodations is somehow “leveling the playing field”, as though they’re competing and we’re trying to make things equally hard for them. what does that even mean!

The goal of accommodations is MAKING EDUCATION ACCESSIBLE TO DISABLED PEOPLE. It literally doesn’t matter if a course with accommodations is somehow “equally hard” for the disabled student as the course as abled students take it, it matters that it’s a functional course

that allows them to learn, and to access the material and the degree. Instructors are often very concerned about making accommodations that substantively change the course requirements, like dropping an assignment or replacing a paper with a test,

on the grounds that it would be “unfair” to other students. But the actually very serious issue of fairness here is not some kind of fair competition between students, which isn’t even really happening?, but fair access to education that considers and respects you.
