This happens in reverse as well. Efficient, productive and crafty designers who have difficulties articulating decisions or explaining rationale (especially w/ out emotion) I, for one, have to work on my communication just as much as my core tasks.

Ditto. I’m trying to flex those muscles as well. I’ve taken an intro to improv class and a couple of communication skills workshops. It’s uncomfortable as hell for me, but I’m slowly learning. I suggest starting with the book “The Art of Persuasion” if classes aren’t an option.

If I’m trying to learn how to cook, I can spend lots of money on expensive cookware, talk about farm to table ingredients, take nice photos of what I’ve attempted to make, but when it comes down to it, does my food actually taste good? Don’t fake the funk.

Also what about designers who designs unrealistic mobile app and have thousands of views on Dribbble and people are praising the crap out of them but you know in reality you can never make something like that? And even if you do the UX wont be as good or the app will be buggy!!
-
I’m mixed about “Dribbblized” shots, especially those using overly attractive models in their hero images to get views. Some are good exercises to design without constraints and hopefully inspire others to think big, but yes, most are unrealistic unfortunately.

Same goes for engineering

I’m always mixed about design or coding exercises when it comes to interviews, but it’s so hard to grade quality and communication skills without it.

we have a design exercise pre-hire that we compensate for, e.g. an amazon gift card worth $150 just for completing the exercise, so we can measure this exact thing. Same with engineers.
-
A gift card? Seriously? Here we save the gift cards to user test interviewees. Potential hires (if we need to do tests) are paid by the hour. Professionals should be treated as such. Obviously you need a solid track record and/or a portfolio to score an interview…
