The fact-checking genre is fine and useful in certain circumstances but it is *woefully* under-theorized as an undertaking, which leads it into all kinds of weird, shoddy, and dubious territory.

Which is also a product of many fact checkers relying upon 3rd parties to do the 'work' of the math... and being ignorant to their established partisanship, biases and bad faith arguments. Fact checkers still work in newsrooms. So incentive speed > accuracy.
