I think bottom line actually over-simplifies the way the structures of incentives and culture of cable news functions.

Don't worry, I'll cover it on my show.

This is one story for which ratings shouldnt matter. It should be on Nightly News every night. (Not necessarily primetime specials, but slipped in like peas in mashed potatoes.) We changed the culture on smoking and seatbelts; I think it can be done.

This strikes me as a selection problem. Until the business model is changed, producers/journalists who start behaving as if ratings don’t matter will simply be replaced. Similar problem as with Republican lawmakers, for whom integrity and good sense are maladaptive.

For me anyway, it's too scary to fathom, especially when there doesn't seem to be an actual, manageable solution.

Perhaps it’s HOW you’re covering it... Ask local news what fire coverage does to their ratings.

That is what happens when the bottom line becomes more important than the public service role the media should take on these issues. We have an urgent crisis on our hands with regards to global warming and it should be covered just as intensely as the disaster in the WH.
