Kennedy handing his seat over to Trump is the most perfect example *ever* about how it is all the party of Trump. All of it. Kennedy looks down from SCOTUS and sees the man in the White House and says “Yes. Him. I want him to be the one to choose my replacement.”

And he does it before midterms too, to make sure the Democrats don't have the chance to win back Congress and have a negotiating position on the replacement. Says a lot about the so-called "swing vote" of the court.

It's think it's more appropriate to say that it's about him choosing the party that chooses his replacement. He knows the kind of justice Trump and the GOP will push into the seat, and that's what he wants.

1) More importantly, it reinforces the reality that elections have consequences, and when there is a danger to the U.S. and the world on one side and a qualified person who would ensure our standing in the world and protect the vulnerable, a 3rd party vote or not voting matters.

I hope his career is remembered for his vote on the Muslim ban, choosing to let Trump appoint his replacement, and nothing else.

Kennedy's successor will likely roll back a lot of what Kennedy voted for. Expect a speedy confirmation process for a hard, far-right candidate that Collins and Murkowski will have no trouble voting for.

Yep, and then they will go after same sex marriage, Roe v. Wade and all kinds of things. We are going to be living in the real life version of “The Handmaids Tale”.

They don't have the votes - unless a Republican Senator shifts and helps them block.

Agree it doesn't look good but could be Kennedy's way of saying Dems, get motivated and go out and vote in the midterms so you can force a moderate. Flip Heller and Cruz, and hold your D seats. Didn't want to stay 2 more years and couldn't risk Rs holding on to Senate.

I am old. I lived through Watergate, 1968/1969. I was 2 blocks from the Twin Towers on 9/11. This is the worst. This is frightening. All 3 branches.

I mean the current situation is the worst in terms of threat to our democracy - not immediate loss of life. We must flip Congress and be ready to hit the streets in protest.
