I point this out not to pick on any of the people involved, but to raise a larger point that I've seen some people picking at: Some are saying that Rudy's an unreliable narrator, so we should ignore him. That seems, to me, to be the wrong answer so long as he is Trump's lawyer.

His statements should be accurately presented for what they are, not more and not less, but they do matter — both as to insights regarding the president and as to his legal team's approach to things. Both of those things matter — a lot — and so reporting on them is important.

Neither of these assume Giuliani's account is factual. They're both just reporting that this is the information Giuliani provided, which is true.
-
No. The second asserts as a fact that he was told that. That's the difference, it's subtle, but it matters.
-
No the second one just says that is the story Giuliani relayed to Maggie Haberman. It makes no assertion as to whether the claim by Giuliani is factual or not, it's just reporting the account that he provided.

@nyt credibility is still challenged from the planted "no collusion article" b/4 election, & this need to jump the shark b/4 WashPo just leads us to flailing journalism. Today was awful for them. ImhoThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Reporting it is one thing. Reporting it as breaking news, with push notification and prominent spot on nyt front page is completely diffetent. Esp if you can't get at least one other person to confirm mueller said these things.

Oh, I hate that assumption. Even when whoever said it is widely considered reliable. On the flip side, unless facts to the contrary have already been reported (or are included in the very same story), I also hate, "Ms Doe
#claims x/y/z." "Says" works just fine. That is all.

Exactly my reaction. The NYT headline should LEAD with “Giuliani says . . .” Instead of ending with what he was “told”.
