FWIW, I think they avoid it becoming a Saturday Night Massacre by (a) ignoring it in the first instance and (b) punting it back to DOJ OIG for them to then promptly not talk for several months before releasing a report saying "we checked and obviously not, what a dumb question"

If it's vaguely phrased, or written as a demand to check whether DOJ followed the correct procedure, DOJ can punt it to OIG. If it's phrased as a demand to open a criminal inquiry then we're into new territory.

Enh, I think y'all are "formalizing" things that DOJ has already decided how they're going to address it. [None of this is not to say that all of it is ridiculous and inappropriate; I just think y'all are interpreting this tweet like it's written by Obama, say, and not Trump.]

fair enough! I see a number of people also interpreting it as a demand for DOJ to comply with Nunes's document request. you're probably right that it's just impressive-sounding word salad; the real question is what the "official demand" says tomorrow, I think.
