I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes - and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!

Demanded via twitter? Wait til tomorrow? "hereby demand", but not officially? Asking a question which is already the subject of an OIG investigation? What a farce this administration continues to be.

Dear Mr President. In response to your request dated May 20, and submitted even more officially on May 21, we have concluded that no, your campaign wasn't surveilled either for political purposes--or indeed at all--because that's not how any of this works. Very truly yours,

The irony, of course, is this completely undermines any possible investigation into it. But maybe that's the point.

We are still only 33% of the way through this presidential term.

FWIW, I think they avoid it becoming a Saturday Night Massacre by (a) ignoring it in the first instance and (b) punting it back to DOJ OIG for them to then promptly not talk for several months before releasing a report saying "we checked and obviously not, what a dumb question"

depends how vaguely the request is worded though, right?

If it's vaguely phrased, or written as a demand to check whether DOJ followed the correct procedure, DOJ can punt it to OIG. If it's phrased as a demand to open a criminal inquiry then we're into new territory.

If it's that, even, how is it different from Trump saying there should be a second special counsel? So, they review it, and a month from now say, we think the US Attorney for the Southern District of X should review what the appropriate next steps are, and 6 months later they sen

the formal request on that came from Congress though, correct? that seems different.

Enh, I think y'all are "formalizing" things that DOJ has already decided how they're going to address it. [None of this is not to say that all of it is ridiculous and inappropriate; I just think y'all are interpreting this tweet like it's written by Obama, say, and not Trump.]

fair enough! I see a number of people also interpreting it as a demand for DOJ to comply with Nunes's document request. you're probably right that it's just impressive-sounding word salad; the real question is what the "official demand" says tomorrow, I think.

This could also be folded into Utah US Attorney John Huber’s ongoing investigation into FBI handling of Clinton investigation. I suspect Trump will be content with any headline that says DOJ is investigating this.
