Justice Ginsburg has the decision in McCoy v. Louisiana, holding that the 6th Amendment allows a defendant to insist that his lawyer not admit guilt, even when the lawyer thinks that's the best way to avoid the death penalty.
The decision is 6-3. Alito is joined by Thomas and Gorsuch in dissent. The Chief Justice and Kennedy joined the more liberal justices. Decision: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/17pdf/16-8255_i4ek.pdf … #SCOTUS
The next opinion is Byrd v. US. Opinion is by Kennedy, for a unanimous court, vacating and remanding the 3rd Cir. Thomas (joined by Gorsuch) and Alito write concurring opinions.
In Byrd, #SCOTUS rules that you don't need to have your name on a rental agreement to have a reasonable expectation of privacy if you're legally driving the car.
The final decision is US v. Sanchez-Gomez. The decision is by Chief Justice Roberts, holding that the case — about shackling of defendants — is moot. #SCOTUS
The decision in Sanchez-Gomez is here: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/17pdf/17-312_i426.pdf … #SCOTUS
That's it. Today's 6 decisions mean that 33 argued cases remain — including 4 heard in 2017 (Epic, Gill, Carpenter, & Masterpiece). The next possible day for #SOTUS decisions is next Monday, May 21.
Me, on Murphy v. NCAA: "The decision was 6, 2, and Breyer."

Sports betting company CEO: "If we do this the right way, the only losers will be the illegal bookies that have been operating a massive black market." Me: You know you're talking about betting, right? In which there are obviously going to be losers, which is ... your business.pic.twitter.com/9K61YTLaVI
