Trump's lawyers weighed in last (and closest to 5p), asserting that they will use an outside e-discovery vendor and outside contract attorneys, as needed, to get the review done "promptly and efficiently." https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4446999-Cohen-v-USA-Trump-Ltr-042518.html …pic.twitter.com/YeHOEgYm7l

Remarkable to step back and realize the president of the United States has lawyers who are saying they might have to go to an outside vendor to hire "experienced contract attorneys" to help out in litigation like this that is clearly so important to him.

Actually no. It allows extra firepower in document review. Nothing strange there.

You essentially repeating what the letter says doesn't change the reality that the president is unable to get representation from large law firms.

A large firm wouldn't necessarily handle it differently. It's become standard practice, subject to client preference, to employ contract reviewers for first-level priv review, even at the largest biglaw shops.

Folks should be careful not to let distaste for Trump cause them to miss the big picture here. The threat to the AC priv is a big deal. And no, I don’t trust gov to decide what is privileged. Glad he is defending on this.

I’m halfway with you all here. See my follow-up tweets in the thread. My point, tho: OK, it’s normal practice; I still think it’s weird when the president is seeking to keep docs secret for him not to have a full legal team set and for them to be considering outsourcing parts.

I think it's more the total lack of confidence that Trump will follow their direction that keeps lawyers away. Whoever represents Trump is going to be known to history, and I would say that his proclivity for blowing up legal strategy with a single tweet is why they all stay away

That definitely is part of it. If you're going to go down in history as Trump's lawyers, it's not going to be pretty. And if you're not even going to get paid for your troubles, it's not worth it.

First cut review of documents is usually done by low level associates. But why are you crowing over the possibility that he cannot get larger firms to represent him? It may speak to something just as sinister as his own approaches.
