(Yes, that was the Original Broadway Cast of RENT. @ATLJono and I got our tickets in the cancellation line moments before the show began on a day trip from DC.

Zooming out! On the bottom left are shows from high school, the bottom center undergrad in DC, top center from my time back in Youngstown, and the right side from during my time in law school and after in Columbus (and visiting elsewhere). So much wonder!pic.twitter.com/0NM76E6uke

So many amazing memories — from a high school Into the Woods production to a guy I had a crush on at AU who was in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum to Sweeney Todd with Christine Baranski and Brian Stokes Mitchell (and so much more). But, Sondheim, basically.

Then, I moved back to DC in 2009, and I was blessed through my job at
@metroweekly and through how awesome a theater world DC has become to get so much more involved in that world. Since returning to DC, I’ve seen, well, this many shows at more than a dozen theaters in the area.pic.twitter.com/QGx8fUJHzT

Of course, there also has been NYC theater (and a trip to Chicago!), which has brought me such unimaginable joy over these past years. I have seen so many amazing shows and met so many unbelievably talented performers (and others in theater). It warms my heart.pic.twitter.com/aQKr2aAsnn

Over the past six months, I’ve been privileged to see still more incredible shows—in DC and NYC—and I just can’t believe how amazing my life is that this world and that all of you who make this world are such a big part of my life. It’s been 25 years since I saw Phantom. Since then, I have connected with so many people I never would have known—and shared further connections with many people I already knew—and learned new and very real perspectives, as well as almost unimaginable worlds, through theater.

Thank you, my theater friends — and all of the people who bring theater into our world — for all that you do. You’re amazing.

You helped a closeted gay boy find a world of out gay people in the plays he read in high school, a young man figuring out his place a way to see a world beyond his, and a guy who got sober and had his evenings much more open countless hours of art to be seen and enjoyed. Thanks.

Night, all, and let us be good to one another — and ourselves. (And support the arts.)
