It’s Feb. 22. One month from today, I will be seeing Angels in America: Millennium Approaches on Broadway. I’m 40 years old, and this show has been in my world for more than half of my life.

The next night, I’ll be seeing Part Two: Perestroika. ... I don’t remember the first time I heard about Angels in America, but I do remember being closeted and reading it. I couldn’t believe the epic majesty and heartbreaking drama contained on the pages.

The story of Louis and Prior and Joe and Belize and Harper and Hannah and Roy and the Angel that Tony Kushner brought forth into the world is one of the great masterpieces of American literature.pic.twitter.com/Kk17JcyR6r

HBO’s 2003 production, with all of its incredible glory (and casting), did a lot to expand the reach of the Pulitzer and Tony-winning work of theater into the broader American public. And it gave me something visual to turn to when I needed this story in my face.

I got to see Part Two of the off-Broadway production a few years back, and saw both parts of the DC-area production in 2016. It was as powerful an experience in 2016 — more than 20 years after I had come out — as it was when I was closeted in high school.pic.twitter.com/yFtmi9ybTF

Then there was the Slate oral history of Angels, just such an outstanding piece of work — so much so that the two folks behind it got a book deal.http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/cover_story/2016/06/oral_history_of_tony_kushner_s_play_angels_in_america.html …

All of which brings us to today, a month before I’ll get to see the incredible Broadway cast, and I’m sitting here with

It’s also
#tbt — well, it was — so the throwback is imagining the look 16-year-old Chris would’ve had on his face if you told him the authors of this book would ask for his thoughts in 20-some years about Angels and why it is still relevant. (And alongside Nathan Lane!)pic.twitter.com/kyGEFUuraE
