A dude placing tenth in his competition and still becoming a “Twitter icon” for all his saucy burns is basically the parable of our times.

This is inaccurate and overly simplistic on so many levels — all of which you’re smart enough to realize — that I can’t really believe that this tweet is to be taken at face value.

Not sure why you think it is inaccurate. You feel different but Sonny just listed facts except for his closing line.

He got a bronze medal in the team competition; he was on the US team, meaning he is one of the best in the US; the “Twitter icon” in quotes is just being a whatever; and, most importantly, his presentation has hardly ever been about “saucy burns.” That’s just not what he’s done.

He did fine; he should be proud of being an Olympian and doing his best but he seems to be acting like he is something he is not and the media has promoted him the same. That is the disconnect.

I don’t see him acting like he’s anything he’s not; he’s being himself, talking in a more honest way than we expect from Olympians. That resonating isn’t all that surprising to me, though, and certainly isn’t something “the media” did. If anything, the media fought to catch up.
