ABC News previously reported that Thomas Green was joining the defense team for Gates — http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-campaign-aide-rick-gates-adds-lawyer-negotiating/story?id=52576551 … — but he has not made any appearance in the case.

This comes in the wake of CNN's reporting, including regarding the hiring of Green, that there could be a chance that Gates might be negotiating with Mueller:https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/23/politics/rick-gates-new-attorney-mueller-russia-investigation/index.html …

Although the public request on Thursday was to "immediately" end representation, the hearing on the motion won't be until next Wednesday:https://twitter.com/ZoeTillman/status/959500327312613382 …

FYI: When I say "That's ... interesting," it means I'll be watching closely, asking around, doing reporting, and will let y'all know if/when I have more. I don't have more to report or I would report it!

Think it’s related to this? Or would that not have encompassed other attorneys ->https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-20/mueller-asks-judge-whether-gates-lawyer-has-conflict-of-interest …
-
Would be weird for that to necessitate the motion for all to withdraw immediately.

Sounds as if they learned their client lied or is prepared to lie to Mueller and/or the Grand Jury. Only other explanation is that Gates hasn't paid their bills.
-
Other possibility is that Gates has flipped and is cooperating with Mueller. Would make sense to bring in new counsel that specializes in plea deals and sentence mitigation.
-
Or that doesn't now have a conflict.

Call me nuts, but billing issues would not be under seal, right?
-
No way. "Your Honor, I ain't heard from Mr. Green" gets on the record all the time.
-
Law school day 1. If there's any chance you'd client is going to jail, get paid upfront. It's not money.
-
Purely conjecture from my brain: The lawyers would stay if he was going to take a plea. However, they couldn’t stay if they knew he was going to lie under oath.
-
But if he takes a plea and their work is done, they may just want to disassociate before it comes down.
-
No way! IMHO. I used to brag about famous defendants in crim defense.
-
Ever think they're really serving other interests who wouldn't be too thrilled with him flipping?

-
That’s possible. I suppose I’m biased towards the lawyers thinking they have...ethics...but alas, that isn’t always true.
