The “outside group” to which Short is laughably referring is THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN. That is not an “outside group,” it is the president’s political operation. People hear “outside group,” they think it’s a PAC that is OUTSIDE of the president’s control. This is the opposite of that.

Todd DID push back and call Short out. That’s my point. The tweet put ellipses in to REMOVE the context Todd gave.

Putting Todd's response in the would've been a lot better, but I though todd gave appropriate pushback. The tweet itself is trash though.
-
That’s my point. They put in ellipses where Todd called him out.
-
Wow I did not even notice that the ellipses consisted of Todd's pushback. That really sucks. It's been frustrating over the last year to see publications try to sanitize and clean up what these people are actually saying.

News companies tweeting out dishonest quotes without context is a terrible media trend, but I thought this tweet was subtly pretty effective.
-
Subtle on Twitter doesn’t really work to a mass audience
-
It led with Short’s incredibly disingenuous claim, unimpeded — contra to what actually happened on the show — and then muddied the waters further by saying “paid for by” and not just that it WAS a Trump ad.

Because
@chucktodd is an imbecile!! -
Todd called him out! That’s my point. The tweet excused his calling Short out with those ellipses.

I get the impression they think the full tweet makes his claim seem inherently absurd, thus the additional context from Todd isn’t needed. But maybe I’m being too nice.
-
Yeah, I think the “paid for by” almost muddies the waters a bit, like, suggesting they funded it but it wasn’t them. But, that’s probably (maybe?) reading too much into it.

At the end of the add, doesn't someone say that HE approved the add?
-
Yes. It is a Trump ad. That is my point.
-
Right, but it underlines the dishonesty of the response to Chuck Todd. Todd should have called him on how explicitly took responsibility for the ad.

I think the quote in context of the tweet is clear. They say right there it's paid for by Trump campaign.
-
No, they place his quote uninterrupted up top, AND add in the confusing “paid for by” language which could leave a reader with the idea that Trump lacked control over the message and just paid for it.
-
I guess that's a fair read. I have more than a passing familiarity with campaign Finance and I know at a superficial level Campaign staff is generally not housed in the White House. I can see how casual reader could see difference with distinction.
