You place the blame on the 1980s media coverage, not Trump, for Trump’s 2018 words with that headline. What is so confusing about why that is seen as a confounding framing decision?

I guess I don't really agree that the headline exonerates Trump. It seeks to explain where he got this idea that all Haitians have AIDS.

“Make” — the word literally means it is not of his doing.

This is a step away from “don’t get so emotional,” so I’m just going to end this conversation. I’ve made my point.

It does seem like you misinterpreted the article’s headline because you are personally close to the issue

“Falsely portrayed”. It refers to tabloid media, yet you are interpreting it as saying all New Yorkers. That seems like a misinterpretation

Um. No, that’s not what I’m saying at all, and that’s not even what the discussion is about. You should read through the thread.

I did, and the root of your problem with the headline is that New Yorkers of all stripes knew it was a panic and didn’t buy into it when the entire point is that Trump did buy into it. I would appreciate if you could speak to me like an adult without the sarcasm and condescension

No, that’s not “the root of my problem,” it has nothing to do with my problem, and you began this conversation with condescension, so that’s what you’re stuck with.

The point, which I made quite clearly, is that the framing in the headline removes the blameworthiness of Trump’s statements today by asserting that 1980s coverage “ma[d]e” him believe things to this day.

I never have made a single comment about the numbers of people who bought into such AIDS panic at the time, though there were many. The point was the removal of Trump’s responsibility for his views today. As I stated:https://twitter.com/chrisgeidner/status/953060094513766401 …

AIDS panic did not "make" Trump do anything. Just like coverage of the Central Park Five did not "make" Trump place a full-page ad calling for the death penalty, to give but one example.
