The headline there, with its “Make Trump” framing, removes independent thought and judgment — and, hence, responsibility — from the person who is now president.https://twitter.com/blakehounshell/status/953053507204075521 …

Did horrible media coverage influence his views? Of course it did. Did he change his views over time when presented with countervailing information (like happened with millions of others)? It appears not.

AIDS panic did not "make" Trump do anything. Just like coverage of the Central Park Five did not "make" Trump place a full-page ad calling for the death penalty, to give but one example.

That's an odd interpretation of this article, which isn't meant to absolve Trump of responsibility--at all.
-
I don't think it's an odd interpretation of the headline at all — which frames the story as one of explaining his views today and not one of "he never moved past that, despite subsequent information that led others to move past that hysteria."
-
it's pretty clear to me that he never moved past that... which is why we published the article...?

You place the blame on the 1980s media coverage, not Trump, for Trump’s 2018 words with that headline. What is so confusing about why that is seen as a confounding framing decision?
-
I guess I don't really agree that the headline exonerates Trump. It seeks to explain where he got this idea that all Haitians have AIDS.
-
“Make” — the word literally means it is not of his doing.
-
I think you are overthinking this...

This is a step away from “don’t get so emotional,” so I’m just going to end this conversation. I’ve made my point.

It's just infuriating. Also, was AIDS hysteria also the reason Trump ran a full-page ad against the Central Park 5 when they were innocent?
