I read the book, I loved the book, and it still didn’t make me feel this way. So, Luca and Timmy and Armie and Michael and everyone else involved did something pretty remarkable.

That we got Timothée Chalamet’s Elio in CMBYN; Saoirse Ronan’s Lady Bird in Lady Bird; Daniel Kaluuya’s Chris in Get Out; and Nahuel Pérez Biscayart’s Sean in BPM is just an abundance of riches when it comes to young performers who brought everything to a role in 2017.

Along with The Shape of Water, these are the best films I’ve seen from 2017. (Still need to see a few stragglers, but I’d love to see these five — especially BPM — get the recognition they deserve.)
