THE POST is a really good movie that goes about telling its story well. The one thing that stuck out to me was how truly great Meryl Streep was — in Devil Wears Prada. We know this, but it was hard not to see parallels.
There are obvious differences, but it was almost as if I was seeing an earlier generation of a Miranda Priestly in the form of Streep’s Kay Graham. There was less confidence, more “should I be here?”—but there were a handful of moments that made me see them as kindred characters.
She is great in THE POST and deserves the recognition she’s getting — the differences make it a very different performance — but it just reminded me how criminally underrated her DEVIL performance was, and likely bc of the type of film it was.
Hanks did well, too! I mean, come on. Spielberg directing Streep and Hanks. YES! It’s obviously going to be a very well done, enjoyable movie!
(Was the condescending, sexist dick played by @WhitfordBradley a real person? Because, probably, and yet, oof.)
In any event, it was good to feel inspired — and reminded that we had a White House not so long ago where the president and senior staff actively despised the press and worked to turn public opinion against the press. But, the press kept doing their job.
And publishers kept backing their newsrooms. And the courts protected the freedom of the press. And the reporting kept happening. I’m proud to work at a publication that is working to keep each of those points alive and strong today.
Don't you now wanna go play "Newspaper" with the other neighborhood kids in the woods behind your house? :)
