I don't know why I have such strong feelings that it's totally appropriate for a group of people to have a conversation at a group table in a coffee shop but obnoxious when a person has an extended phone conversation and doesn't step away?

This is all distracting from a critical piece of thinking. Why is it that I can sit on a train and talk to my companion but I cannot sit on the same train and talk to someone on the phone? Makes. No. Sense.

There’s a lot on the thread responding to that, with multiple reasons given — including science!
-
Reason 1 is the dumb people on the phone who feel they need to scream. Reason 2 is nosey people get frustrated because they can only eavesdrop on half the convo. The proper target of your ire should be the people who talk too loud. I would join that cause.

It's true. Where I live, the rich socialite mothers also do it, so your theory still holds up (just adds a local layer of narcissistic folks to it). I'm not ever around their kids anymore, so 'mothers' may be too specific but I wouldn't know.

I think it is definitely an alpha male characteristic.

Also not socialized to consider the feelings or experience of those around them to the extent women and POC must.

Well put.

I always believe it is rude to talk on the phone while you are actually with other people.
