We can pretend this is hypothetical and not my current circumstances if that's easier.

[Honestly, and I know the armies will come after me, but .... it's mainly straight white guys who do the "talk on the phone at a group table" thing, in my experience, and that's a part of it.]

Breaking: A white guy DMs to tell me I’m being unfair to straight white guys — inserting inaccurately into my tweet that I was “attributing all table phone talking to ‘straight white guys’” — and asked, “What is it that only gay alcoholics do?”

Only thing, I’m a recovering alcoholic, so I don’t know if that changes the answer. ... And, I’m bipolar, too, if you want to really go for it.

Anyway, the point was that I think those who feel more comfortable claiming all spaces as their own feel more comfortable speaking on phones in group settings. And, despite white guy’s sadness I made that insinuation, it is what I’ve seen and I think it’s likely true overall.

Too hard to eavesdrop?
-
No, it's easier. People are louder on the phone!

I'm quite the coffee house regular and always step outside to speak whenever possible. I know I talk louder on the phone and it's really annoying for others sitting nearby. In person convos are usually tolerable because of the natural pauses, but not always.
-
Same, I can only think of one time I didn't do that recently, and I still moved tables that time so I wasn't distracting anyone!

I think this is pretty widespread, or at least I feel this too— half a conversation is kind of an unnatural cadence

I think there’s something natural going on. We are able to sort of ignore the group because we see what’s going on. The phone is one sided and the missing piece feels wrong (like we can’t hear? I dunno) so we can’t help but tune in and it gets annoying.

Two thoughts: because usually the single cell phone conversation is just as loud, if not louder than an entire group and usually w the group you don't hear word for agonizing word of the entire conversation?

Phone calls seem private. It's uncomfortable to see. It's as if they are masturbating in public.

Because you expect a group of people to have a conversation and you don't expect to have to listen in to half of a long phone conversation.

It's not just men. Women shopping talking on speaker phone. We hear both conversations. No manners. Hang up the phone and enjoy your surroundings.
