NYT: "The president’s determination to fire Mr. Comey even led one White House lawyer to take the extraordinary step of misleading Mr. Trump about whether he had the authority to remove him."https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/04/us/politics/trump-sessions-russia-mcgahn.html?_r=0 …

Note that DOJ's spokesperson outright denies the NYT's claim about a Sessions aide :pic.twitter.com/oqq4E8PA74

Seems like miscommunication about the severity of some "firing offense" by Comey to allow Trump to get away with firing him, not legal opinion on for cause termination. Recall the pretextual memo that Rosenstein wrote targeting HRC email letter...

Don't know where you get that from.

Speculating that scenario laid out for Trump was that he likely could not fire Comey without a really good cause, not based on law, but on optics and politics b/c result in doj being forced to deepen Russia investigation, not end it.

You can’t understand it? He knew it’d be a crime and Trump would do it. He was trying to stop Trump from doing it.
