It does matter! That’s the entire point of this thread. Would people have preferred a 5-minute interview with Trump storming out? But, as I clearly said, people are acting like this transcript is now in stone and no one can contextualize it. That’s dumb.
One interview is not a standalone thing. It is one piece of many. It is not deference; it is a means of getting the most the interviewer thinks s/he can get out of the subject.

The problem is we believe this will be the new normal - because in many ways it is! Trump was rarely challenged during campaign, reporters have incentive to maintain access once given.

Most distressingly
@maggieNYT , a pretty influential voice when it comes to the paper's treatment of Trump, has unwittingly noted that this is a regular strategy Trump uses to get softball interviews, and she at least has come to decide it's better than hard-hitting questions.pic.twitter.com/lBHzifEa7J

(I may be misreading that last point - it may well be that this "surprise" interview from Trump is a new thing. If it is, it's not behavior the press should be celebrating. It's a power move allowing him to totally control the interview and keep reporters unprepared.)
