Maybe someone called him for an interview and pictures, he asked about Person of the Year, and they said the request had nothing to do with that. He took that as him not being chosen and quickly tweeted that he'd declined because...ego.
What would be the point of responding if it wasn't meant to be a denial?
He is just hedging in case he doesn't get the award.
