Now, a year later, recently confirmed appeals court judges and nominees likely to be confirmed in the near future are moderating panels, and the newest justice — Neil Gorsuch — is speaking tonight.

This is an extraordinarily successful moment, that was totally unexpected, for the legal right — that the Trump White House's quick movement on nominations has helped make possible.

And, of course, the Gorsuch nomination was, in large part, the result of McConnell's strategy for addressing Obama's Garland nomination. And McConnell's interest in seeing all of these judicial nominations move quickly moves things further still.

Trump makes possible the long-term judicial aims of McConnell, the Federalist Society, and others. The importance of that cannot be overstated.

It's notable that, after Gorsuch, Trump's first judicial nominee was actually announced by McConnell — it was someone the senator long had backed, Judge Thapar from Kentucky.https://www.buzzfeed.com/zoetillman/mitch-mcconnell-announced-trumps-first-lower-court-nominee?utm_term=.osQmRwyDN#.obZ3PnVx8 …

The Federalist Society has a wide range of views within its membership — I watched disagreements over marriage and the like — and I think many members are uncomfortable with and have even spoken out against certain Trump actions.

But, seeing the excitement at the Mayflower today (and seeing the reports from Union Station tonight) is a sign that the Federalist Society is excited about at least one aspect of the Trump presidency: judges.

Besides judges, the other main aspect of the Trump administration most favored by the Federalist Society likely is its efforts to reverse Obama era regulations.
