The issue is less 280 than the little orb instead of a character account — it's silent encouragement to go longer instead of edit.

Interesting! I suggested it might encourage the opposite! If you're not seeing the number remaining, you'll just stop when you're done.

But that's, ultimately, the 280, not the orb. Being told one has 120 characters left, I'd think, would encourage continuing, rather than encourage editing.
