I always do. But you also have to know individual country etiquette. In some countries it is considered an insult (Japan).
-
I last left the US in 2005. But, good point for others.

How do you leave the money so housekeepers know it's for them?
-
Clearly on the bed. On or by the pillow. With a note sometimes.
-
I write a brief note.

A friend who worked as a housekeeper also pointed out that tipping every day (vs at end of stay) is good, b/c it's not always the same person cleaning your room over the course of a stay. Spread the love.

My old school Aunt & Uncle taught me to always tip housekeeping. We also leave a note thanking them for their hard work

Yes indeed please tip the housekeepers. I do and I’m retired. Don’t claim you can’t afford it, if you can’t afford to tip them stay home.

Always do this, plus a note thanking them so it's clear it's not just a random $5 I've left out.
-
Yes, I do the same. Something like "For housekeeping, thank you"

It's horrible back breaking work, often within a heartless work environment. I tip them what I can.
-
Yes, they absolutely earn the tip, I'm happy to leave it
