Sure. But at the same time, you have to be pretty hubristic and egotistical to believe that you yourself are free of motivated reasoning.https://twitter.com/orinkerr/status/886051899224600576 …

By this standard, a few law professors have a ways to go before becoming lawyers. http://time.com/4856225/law-school-free-speech/ … pic.twitter.com/NTPs59E4rr

My best law professors acknowledged their biases. My worst acted as though they were valiantly divorcing their political and legal views.

We're all cursed with motivated reasoning. It's near impossible to gauge the extent to which our political views drive our legal analysis.

Best we can do is be honest about our political biases and hope our legal arguments are strong enough to carry the day on their own.

for similar reasons "objective journalism," is and has always been a fraud and self-delusion.

I agree. Much better for journalists to make an argument than to pretend that they are dispassionately observing The Truth.

Enh. I think too many people only try to "make an argument." I think there's a wide gulf between what David said above and that.

There's a huge difference between, "We all have our biases and need to account for that," and "only argument-making journalism works."

True. I do think we'd all be lost without fact-based journalism. At the same time, I'm skeptical that total journalistic objectivity exists!

Humans aren't always making an argument, but humans all always have a point of view, whether we admit it or not.

Yes. That's all I'm saying. There's a big difference between the two — esp when it comes to journalism.

it is rather remarkable however that for decades journalistic elites built a profession around a falsehood.

I mean, I think that's dramatically oversimplifying things, but ... there's obviously a reason I've made the choices I've made.
