No federal court had ruled against DOMA previously, although there had been a handful of challenges.
At 4p on July 8, 2010, Judge Tauro issued his ruling.pic.twitter.com/WvoFulKjDS
As I wrote at @metroweekly that day: "Federal Court Rules DOMA Sec. 3 Violates Equal Protection."http://www.metroweekly.com/2010/07/federal-court-rules-doma-sec-3/ …
Read the decision from Judge Tauro here: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/3891346-Gill-DistCtDecision.html … / Here's his summary of the equal protection ruling:pic.twitter.com/OQkPzivhqR
At this point, President Obama did not support marriage equality, DOJ was defending DOMA, and same-sex couples could only marry in 3 states.
It would be another month before Judge Walker would strike down #Prop8 in California.
As @AlexKing3rd notes (& is mentioned in my @metroweekly story), Massachusetts also had a case before Tauro.
He also ruled in favor of Massachusetts on Tenth Amendment and Spending Clause grounds. http://www.metroweekly.com/2010/07/federal-court-rules-doma-sec-3/ …pic.twitter.com/wwpnk1EzKx
