The framing is backwards. Comey would not have been worried about whether he & the FBI were following protocol. He was worried about Trump.

Then, the idea that Sessions responded by saying that the FBI and DOJ needed to be careful about "following appropriate policies" is so odd.

I agree with this. The DOJ statement is too technical to play wide, and doesn't make sense in a way that would be effective with Mueller.https://twitter.com/JustADCohen/status/872981191317757952 …

Correcting sensing danger to AG from today's testimony, the DOJ responds. Robert Mueller won't care a lick about this spin. https://twitter.com/TheJusticeDept/status/872947511845171200 …

You know what I've noticed: I feel like DOJ press releases have become much more overtly political since the administrations changed.

u.s. attorney's office in Massachusetts is putting out a lot more immigration stuff, too

They all are. That's the usual the subtle politics; ie, used to be more CFPB-teamed criminal cases. It's the overt stuff that is new to me.

So Comey said "I want to ensure we're following proper protocol" & Sessions responded "We need to be careful we're following policies"? Huh?

It reads as utterly transparent butt-covering to me. Sessions is going out of his way to say see he didn't tell me about obstruction issues.

Session spinning of events does not help him. He left Comey alone with trump once. After recusing himself helped fire him.

Is that meant to rebut Comey's testimony that AG Sessions said nothing to him when Comey asked Sessions to keep Trump away from him?
