#SCOTUS grants one new case: Husted v. Randolph Institute, about Ohio removing people from voting rolls.
#SCOTUS takes no action on Masterpiece Cakeshop, again.
#SCOTUS also takes no action on Peruta, the California gun rights case, or any of the cell-site tracking cases.
The Husted cert grant cannot be seen as a good thing by voting rights groups. Even the state acknowledged no circuit split here. #SCOTUS
It's a two-box day at #SCOTUS. Opinions shortly.
First #SCOTUS decision is in Los Angeles v. Mendez, opinion by Alito, vacating 9th Cir decision. No dissent. Gorsuch did not participate.
#SCOTUS holds that the 9th Cir's "provocation rule" has "no basis" in the Fourth Amendment.
Here's is the Mendez decision: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/16pdf/16-369_09m1.pdf …
Second decision, from Ginsburg, is BNSF Railway v. Tyrell, reversing Montana Sup Ct in a personal jurisdiction challenge. #SCOTUS
Here's the decision in BNSF Railway: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/16pdf/16-405_4gdj.pdf … #SCOTUS
Third #SCOTUS decision, by Thomas, is in Esquivel-Quintana v. Sessions, reversing the 6th Circuit re: interp of "sexual abuse of a minor."
Here is the decision in Esquivel-Quintana: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/16pdf/16-54_5i26.pdf … #SCOTUS
Final #SCOTUS decision of the day, by the Chief Justice, is Impression Products v. Lexmark, reversing the Federal Circuit.
Here is the Impression Products decision (it's a patent case): https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/16pdf/15-1189_ebfj.pdf … #SCOTUS
Correction: Gorsuch did participate in one decision today: BNSF Railway, joining the majority. (h/t @JoshuaHandell & @mjs_DC) #SCOTUS
And, that's it from #SCOTUS for the day (and, likely, the week). Next conference is Thursday, with orders set for June 5.
25 argued cases from this #SCOTUS term remain. Jennings, Lee v. Tam, Ziglar, Hernandez, & Trinity Lutheran are the 5 key cases I'm watching.
There are important doctrinal issues at play & decisions that could have big fallout in the future, but there are no national blockbusters.
