I cried so much in that theater, afraid of so many things — but also afraid of all the things I didn't know. Then, I hid it when I left.
-
But, I kept something—the story, that Jonathan Demme directed—close to me. I became obsessed with the movie's soundtrack, in part, to do so.
-
Two winters later, I was out, living in DC, and had my first boyfriend. It was a new world, and I've lived in it — out and proud — since.
-
It's been more than 20 years since that coming out winter now even, but I still remember the feelings I felt in that theater when I was 16.
-
Thanks for telling that story. RIP, Jonathan Demme.
-
And thank you for telling your story. That is a beautiful remembrance and a telling statement about the value of art.

That movie! After seeing it, my mom said, "If any of my kids were gay, I would hope they would come out!" I stayed silent for some reason.

God - that movie is like a history piece now. Reminder of the fear back then. I remember it was a big deal that Springsteen did a song.
