Four years ago this weekend, @kaplanrobbie was finishing preparing for her arguments in US v. Windsor, Edie Windsor's challenge to DOMA.

-
When Windsor was heard on March 27, 2013, only nine states plus DC had equal marriage rights for same-sex couples.
-
Here was my report on what happened at
#SCOTUS that week: https://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/is-treating-married-couples-differently-constitutional?utm_term=.okdOJqkRw9#.emNragXEDl … [

Of course, three months later, Justice Kennedy, for a 5-4 court, said DOMA's ban was unconstitutional. https://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/supreme-court-tips-scales-of-justice-toward-marriage-equalit?utm_term=.ac4m5gBeDw#.xcJ3rBe9P5 … / My opening:pic.twitter.com/qu8fH5zRBf

I also talked to Edie and Robbie that afternoon. Here's what they had to say: https://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/edie-windsor-talks-about-her-victory-it-just-feels-glorious?utm_term=.ujWO5E1emW#.gq8vWQV12z …pic.twitter.com/ZafHgyETdh

Despite the time it took him to get there, the role that Obama played in moving the federal gov't on marriage shouldn't be ignored.
-
It wasn't until Feb. 23, 2011, that then-AG Holder announced the government would no longer defend DOMA in court.
-
But, by time Edie Windsor was at
#SCOTUS, DOJ was these, solidly on her side. DOJ's brief: https://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/obama-administration-urges-supreme-court-to-strike-down-doma?utm_term=.wkpJwlObpZ#.jeL6j70rgP … -
And, of course, by the time
@JimObergefell got to#SCOTUS — read his story here: https://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/his-huband-died-in-2013-but-jim-obergefell-is-still-fighting … — Obama was all the way on board. -
In March 2015, the Obama administration urged
#SCOTUS to take marriage equality nationwide.https://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/obama-administration-urges-nationwide-end-to-same-sex-marria?utm_term=.iqODOydq2z#.ptj8DZ2kyr … -
In June 2015 (of course), that's what the court, in another Kennedy opinion, did. https://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/supreme-court-rules-for-nationwide-marriage-equality?utm_term=.hp8wvGOQg3#.keRo8Nkp45 …

And here we are two years later with a Republican president and his Supreme Court nominee — both of whom call that ruling "settled" law.
-
All of that is a long way of saying, "Well, it's been quite a four years since we didn't even know if Kennedy would strike down DOMA."
