One of the things I've learned in my time in journalism is that there are *many* ways to be an incredible journalist doing an essential job.
-
-
Others, I've gotten pretty good at over time & am comfortable working through now. And, finally, there are the things I know I do very well.
-
I'm pretty bad at on-the-scene, event coverage, for example. I just love reading stuff from the people who do it so well.
-
Profiles are difficult for me — and editors like
@katherinemiller and@SteveKandell and others have saved me many times. -
Accessible, smart breaking news coverage is a skill that
@lisatozzi and@TomNamako have taught me so much about how to do it well. -
And, there's stuff I'm really good at: tracking complex litigation through the process, explaining issues at intersection of law and policy.
-
And, a sort of specialty I've developed and love: Taking some historical development and explaining why it's relevant today. So much fun!
-
In any event, good journalism would be nothing if only my skills were available — or if only any one journalist's skills were available.
-
There are too many ways to tell too many essential stories. Learning to appreciate the importance of & skill behind all of those ways is
. -
And, as a journalist, having the humility to know—even if you're great!—that you lack some of those skills is important humility to have.
-
Anyway, I was thinking about that last night, so I thought I'd share!
