Does the Chief try to keep the center holding with Kennedy? Or does he try and bring Kennedy with him to a 5-justice conservative majority?
depends on the case. Also should remember that Kennedy & Breyer are close, are they not?

That's part of why I find the Chief's move(s) so interesting. I'm watching where they're not nec to the outcome of the case, esp.
a smart chief wields the assigning power strategically. It’s a major weapon if used properly.
I think legitimacy/stability matter deeply to Roberts, and I think it's something he took from Rehnquist.
Given the chance to overturn Miranda, Rehnquist didn't. Given the chance to gut the ACA, Roberts went narrow.
