After having taken a two-year hiatus while in state government, I returned to blogging just as the Obama administration was getting started.

-
-
I thought I was going to be writing about State AGs and preemption and regulatory reform. But, the news gods had other ideas in mind.
-
Soon thereafter, a California case challenging whether that state's Prop 8 had been a proper topic for a referendum was being heard.
-
.
@shelbygeidner and@ngeidner and@TiffanyStarnes convinced me that "I had to join Twitter," so I did on the day before the arguments. -
From there, it hasn't stopped. ... In April 2009, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled unanimously in favor of marriage equality.
-
On opposite coasts, federal court challenges to DOMA and Prop 8 were filed. And pressure began building on Obama to act for LGBT rights.
-
And I kept writing.
-
Fast-forward to this week, and I opened up Twitter to cover arguments on the West Coast in another case.
-
It's the start of a new administration, and I, again, am certain that the news gods will determine what I cover — my planning be damned.
-
This time, the case was not a topic I ever would have imagined covering. ... And the audience that I had for my coverage was humbling.
-
I can't connect all the dots that got me from there to here, but I am so grateful for it & try my best to take the responsibility seriously.
-
I've learned so much from so many people — and had so many incredible editors — in the past 8 years. It's unreal. I've been so lucky.
-
I also got sober, which made a lot easier in a lot of ways — and I think has made me a better person than I was before.
-
And, let's be honest, I also now have a (v cute) nephew in my life who really did change something in me and brings me so much happiness.
-
Now, here we are, at the start of a new administration, and I have a privileged role to do what I hope is fair, important work.
-
So, eight years ago, I had no conception of where my life would lead me, or what twists and turns would be coming my way. But, I kept going.
-
It took me to places I never would have imagined.https://twitter.com/orinkerr/status/829569303900991489 …
-
And now it feels like I'm just getting started.
-
So, thanks for joining me — way back when, or in the years since. I love my work, & I'm so grateful that I get to share it with all of you.
-
Night, all, and let us be good to one another — and ourselves.
