Like, there are at least two points in the movie where black people are almost literally treated as objects by Gosling's character.

I think that's likely true. Lots of ~star~ films that paint beautiful pictures of Hollywood get that treatment, don't they?

Also: It's possible a well done, uplifting, fantastical-at-points film is what some people are looking for this year?

Also correct. I didn't hate it. It was certainly well made. My big gripe is, I could have used more than like 5 or 6 songs!!
