I found my first picture with Michelle Obama—from Feb. 2008 in Ohio, during the primaries. (I think we both look better now, tbh.) #tbtpic.twitter.com/JAI21iuZqG

I learned more than I knew possible in that time, about myself most of all. And there's been some awful shit, but it's also been magical.
I left a job as a lawyer, I left Ohio, I found a new career and Metro Weekly, I got sober, I moved into DC, I moved to BuzzFeed.
I've also been honored and privileged to cover the Obama administration. I learned a lot about how to cover our national government.
I came in covering "don't ask, don't tell" repeal, which took me to Congress and the Pentagon, then DOMA, which took me to the courts.
I also covered the broader marriage equality movement and the growing Title VII / Title IX / LGBT rights ~story~ and ENDA and more.
Eventually, I became the legal editor at BuzzFeed News and expanded my work, covering SCOTUS more broadly and focusing on the death penalty.
I've also been able to spend time on some other criminal justice areas and report on some election law issues as well.
I now get to work w/ a tremendous group of reporters, too—from @dominicholden to @csmcdaniel & @TasneemN to the new addition, @ZoeTillman.
I've had countless aggressive stories asking questions of this administration that they didn't want me asking. I'm most proud of that work.
Now, as we prepare for a new president, I'll take what I've learned and put it to use as best I can in pursuit of the important stories.
And, as w/ this administration, I look forward to sharing w/ you all what I find—& having you all tell me what I'm missing & can do better.
With that, it's time for bed here. ... Night, all, and let us be good to one another — and ourselves.
