To me from Ohio at the time, Gawker et al. somewhat represented "cool success" on the internet at the time I started blogging in June 2003.

One of my proudest days back then was the day I got to be Wonkette for a day in January 2006, in between
@anamariecox &@DavidLat's tenures. -
I was a first-year lawyer law blogger in Columbus, Ohio, but Ana and David knew me and liked me, so I got asked to do it. A ridiculous day.
-
A decade on, the ridiculous feeling of that day still comes back to me. Here was my opening: http://wonkette.com/150791/another-day-of-the-patriarchy … (FORESHADOWING, MUCH??)
-
Anyway, eventually Wonkette became a separate entity, and I've become IRL friends with both Ana and David, and the internet is amazing ...
-
... and Gawker and
@nicknotned and@Lock were big parts of creating that spirit—the spirit that this all could become SOMETHING and MATTER. -
Over time, I've had lots of issues with the way Gawker handled lots of things. So it goes; I didn't work there, and I didn't run it.
-
At times, moreover, many very big, very important publications have arguably fallen much farther off the track than I think Gawker ever did.
-
So, while I didn't read all Gawker published these days, and while the publication often took swipes at my publication, I will miss them.
