BTW, I don't think this Obama answer was ill-intentioned, I just think it is unsupported by the facts and unintentionally ill-advised.
I've asked the White House about it, though it was at the end of the day on a Friday, and I hope to get some clarification.
People acting like I'm saying Obama had to attack the states: I said no such thing. He chose to go on for three graphs; he didn't need to.
The result of that is that he said things: (1) factually unsupportable, (2) likely not even in fitting w the admin's own position on NC law.
And before people ask about how I can know as to 2, I'd point folks to the admin's brief in the Grimm case:http://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/obama-administration-supports-transgender-student-in-federal#.jrXG9MGNR …
OK, that's that (for now).
@chrisgeidner I don't see anything bad about what he said. Though I certainly hope people boycott both states
@jayhawkjack Those two sentences kinda conflict with one another, but, OK.
@chrisgeidner not really. He stated he disagreed with the law, but as President he says he thinks people traveling there will be safe
@jayhawkjack You're wrong, on several points. That's not what he said, but, more importantly, what does "as President" mean?
@jayhawkjack Like, "as President," he doesn't think the law says what it says? Or what?
@chrisgeidner Not sure what you wanted him to say....?
@DougMattis Um, not misrepresenting the laws of states seems like a good start.
@chrisgeidner I'm on your side, here. So how did he misrepresent states law? It felt icky reading it..maybe your answer helps me understand.
@chrisgeidner I think he was simply defending our country (for better or worse) while on foreign soil. He couldn't say 'they're hicks'.
@michele5411 @chrisgeidner Obama should NOT have said: "If you guys come to North Carolina or Mississippi, everybody will be treated well".
@Jamie4476 @chrisgeidner I disagree completely... he was speaking to the entire nation. He was representing our country.
UK trans people surely won't mind not being able to pee in the airport or at rest stops in North Carolina. @chrisgeidner
@chrisgeidner my reading of it is police issues with enforceability but what worries me is the citizens who will try enforce it - dangerous
@chrisgeidner & aside from LGTB issues, UK has a fairly large Indian/Pakistani populations... We've seen a few, uh, incidents stateside.
