I was 16 when the murders happened. The night of the Bronco chase, I was packing to leave for the high school debate national tournament.

I remembered the darkened Time cover. I remembered Ito and Kato and Fuhrman. I remembered the glove. I remembered a sense of racial divide.
-
But, it was my senior year of high school — and my last summer at home — and I was a privileged white boy in the Midwest. It seemed distant.
-
It also was the summer that I was figuring out my own life and starting to come out. All of this seemed very distant, indeed.
-
The next thing I really remember is being asleep in my dorm room at American University in October when the verdict came down.
-
Then, in a city, in a far more diverse (if privileged) environment, the debate also was more diverse, the voices at times heated.
-
But, I definitely don't think I saw even 1/3 of all that was going on. I was not yet thinking about these issues as deeply as I do today.
-
More importantly, I hadn't heard enough — I hadn't listened enough — to understand.
-
Watching that snapshot of what was happening in 1994–95 through the lens I use to look at things today is striking.
-
It makes me all the more grateful for the opportunities I've had to expand my vision—and the scope of my knowledge—over the past 22 years.
-
tl;dr: The show is excellent, really takes you there. Sarah Paulson is amazing; John Travolta is remarkably good, as is Courtney Vance.
