Th correction makes the sentence technically accurate, yet still overstates reality at the time.
No states had marriage constitutional amendments in 1996. Only Hawaii & Alaska had votes in 1998, and only Nebraska & Nevada did in 2000.
.@chrisgeidner Is there statistical evidence that fed amendments are ratified only after a plurality of states have corresponding ones?
@chrisgeidner Well there isn't. Almost all fed amendments deal with adjusting existing text in the constitution. 1/2
@chrisgeidner My point being that using the absence of state amendments as proof that a fed one wasn't in the works seems weak. 2/2
@keiffer_a No, that's not the point. There was no federal amendment discussion. This was a secondary claim; that states talking about ...
@keiffer_a amendments could have led lawmakers to think a federal amendment "was looming." My point was that even that claim is very weak.
@chrisgeidner This I grasp. My assessment is that the absence of state amendments does nothing to prove the "nothing looming" chatter.
@keiffer_a It was a sentence about state amendments in someone else's story, not mine.
