@keiffer_a amendments could have led lawmakers to think a federal amendment "was looming." My point was that even that claim is very weak.
@chrisgeidner This I grasp. My assessment is that the absence of state amendments does nothing to prove the "nothing looming" chatter.
@keiffer_a It was a sentence about state amendments in someone else's story, not mine.
@chrisgeidner @keiffer_a if you were listening to talk radio, where most of the wedge issues were coming from, there was plenty of demand
@blucaller @chrisgeidner DOMA Amicus brief by 4 US Senators referenced in WaPo story confirms some Ayes were to suppress fed amendment talk.
@keiffer_a @blucaller That is a post-hoc narrative, of which they could provide no evidence.
@keiffer_a @blucaller When I did my yearlong investigation into DOMA in 2011, Daschle was only one to claim that; others dismissed claim.
@chrisgeidner @keiffer_a so it cld be said, if WH thought Amdt was a genuine threat, DOMA was esp effective at shutting down talk of one
@chrisgeidner @keiffer_a btw, I hated that DOMA was passed and signed but even then believed it was a firewall agnst worse
@chrisgeidner @keiffer_a I also thought WJC signing it was cynical and a big cave
