I will never forget Judy Shepard's statement: "Go home, give your kids a hug, and don't let a day go by without telling them you love them."

Judy's actions & words during those days, in the months that followed, at the trial, & in the years since have been something to watch.

Five years ago, I got to talk w/ Moisés Kaufman about his play, The Laramie Project, which takes us back there.http://www.metroweekly.com/2010/11/storied-lives/ …

Four years ago, I split apart the days of the story of Matthew Shepard into separate posts on Tumblr. Today, I began with that final post.

Here was the first: Enter Matthew Shepard: http://chrisgeidner.tumblr.com/post/11131331684/enter-matthew-shepard … / The second: To The Hospital: http://chrisgeidner.tumblr.com/post/11171690561/to-the-hospital …

The third: Brutality Horrifies Residents: http://chrisgeidner.tumblr.com/post/11219883057/brutality-horrifies-residents … / The fourth: The Story Spreads: http://chrisgeidner.tumblr.com/post/11267611172/the-story-spreads …

The fifth: National Waiting Day: http://chrisgeidner.tumblr.com/post/11307440331/national-waiting-day … / The sixth, and final: Rest In Peace: http://chrisgeidner.tumblr.com/post/11345825075/rest-in-peace …

Matthew and I were the same age. I had just moved back home to the Midwest in 1998. I drove back to DC with a friend for the Capitol vigil.
-
I'm still, to this moment, struck by how hard his death hit me. I know that I thought, "That could have been — could be — me." I was afraid.
-
It was a different time, yes. But I know that, for too many, it is not. I see the stories we report of trans women of color being killed.
-
I know that there is someone, that there are many someones, going to sleep tonight w/ the same fear 21-year-old me had. "That could be me."
-
So, tonight, I go to bed remembering Matthew — and thinking about all of those people still living in fear of violence b/c of who they are.
-
Night, all, and let us be good to one another.
