Michael Hastings and David Carr were very different journalists from very different eras. Both, however, showed me an ethos of fearlessness.

Carr, Ebert, and Hastings are all dead now. I couldn't even pretend to by any of them. They're all singular figures. But, I can be me.

I can try to be fearless and honest, and my greatest blessing would be to live a sober life so that I can do good and be here for others.

Many of us mourning David Carr tonight will try our best to do this craft, journalism, justice in the morning without him. I know I will.
