Michael Hastings and David Carr were very different journalists from very different eras. Both, however, showed me an ethos of fearlessness.

So many young or newer journalists, like myself, have our own struggles with addiction, and his story was one more way he helped others.
-
Carr's willingness to be as fearless in telling his own story as he was with the telling of others' stories showed his character so plainly.
-
Although I talked with many folks, and let some time pass, before I talked about my own sobriety, Carr & Ebert set a clear example for me.
-
I truly believe that being open about my struggle with addiction and my sobriety today is important -- and makes me a better journalist.
-
And I'm so grateful to David Carr and Roger Ebert for giving me that example of fearlessness, and providing those writings for me to read.
-
Carr, Ebert, and Hastings are all dead now. I couldn't even pretend to by any of them. They're all singular figures. But, I can be me.
-
I can try to be fearless and honest, and my greatest blessing would be to live a sober life so that I can do good and be here for others.
-
Many of us mourning David Carr tonight will try our best to do this craft, journalism, justice in the morning without him. I know I will.
-
For now, I'm going to step away and take some time for myself and my thoughts before bed.
Night, all, and be good to one another. - 1 more reply

@chrisgeidner Perfectly said. He owned every bit of himself, no excuses necessary. A rare breed of honesty. -
@chrisgeidner and yes, his struggle helped me with mine. An absolutely crushing loss.
