The day before Obama's election in 2008, there only had been 3 pro-marriage rulings — and there were only 2 states with marriage equality.

Along w Obama's election also came the passage of Proposition 8 in CA, which ended marriage equality there and left MA alone until CT.

Although the CT marriage ruling happened before the 2008 election, procedural happenings meant marriage equality didn't start until mid-Nov.
